serviceExeo formed part of the project team after being appointed as the Civil Engineering Construction company for the construction of the L’Ormarins Hydro Power Project on the L’Ormarins Estate near Franschhoek which has the potential to generate 2.3MW of green electricity.

The project required the design and construction of a pipeline from an environmentally sensitive, high and inaccessible part in the mountain to convey water to the first turbine station situated about 300m below the intake point. A second pipeline conveys water from the first turbine chamber to a balancing dam or directly to a second turbine chamber situated a further 100m lower the first turbine chamber. The water is then returned to the lower part of the same stream it has been extracted from.

The pipeline was constructed by conventional open excavation methods in the lower lying areas but in the inaccessible mountain areas, a helicopter was used to assist in construction the pipeline an above ground concrete pipe plinths.

CESAawardExeo’s input included the following:

  • construction of a steel helicopter landing pad on the mountain,
  • construction of the weir at the abstraction point, high up in the mountain
  • construction of the concrete plinths in the mountain
  • installation of rock anchor points
  • construction of HDPE, ductile iron, steel and oPVC pipelines
  • construction of a steel and pedestrian pipe bridge across a gorge, in a inaccessible area of the mountain
  • construction of a steel pipe and pedestrian bridge across the stream at the foot of the mountain
  • construction of both hydro power stations
  • grouting in of mechanical equipment
  • construction of access roads
